Creating a Resource

You'll create and modify all resources for your site, from Articles to Links, in pretty much the same way.  Clicking the  new button at the top of the resource list will open a new window with fields for you to fill out.  What fields exist depend on the type of resource you are creating.  Each field represents a particular property of the resource in question.

tabs and fields

The fields for each resource are displayed across several tabs.  Renao uses the tabs to group properties by use.  Most resources have a tab for properties you want displayed to the visitor (the Content tab), a tab for linking to related resources (the Related tab) and a tab for publishing instructions and meta data (the Publishing Tab).

If it is not evident what a particular property is for, many fields have an info icon (info icon) next to them.  Clicking on it will bring up a brief explanation for that field.

How these fields appear to your visitors depends on the design templates that make up either the theme you've chosen or the custom design you've created.

text editor for articles

The body field for Articles (and the body field of the homepage of collections) is a bit special.  It represents the buil of the text and information you'll want to display on a web page.  As such, you'll want to be able to format the text, add images and links, and so on.  The body field has a special toolbar for adding formatting, much the same as you would see in a word processor.  For a more thorough overview of the toolbar, you may want to take a minute to watch our video tutorial on this rich text editor (coming soon).

related resources

You will likely have multiple resources on your site that are conceptually similar to or in some way complement each other.  It would be handy for your visitors to know about these other resources.  It is a common practice to list such "related links" in a sidebar or at the end of a page.  The Related tab lets you specify those related resources.

For a tour of how to relate resources, watch our video tutorial on resource relationships (coming soon).

saving your work

Renao does not automatically save changes you make in the editor window.  Whenever you make additions or alterations to a resource, you will need to remember to save your work.  Click the blue disk (save icon) next to the tabs at the top of the editor window to do this.

publishing

The publishing tab includes fields that let you specify how your resource will be presented to your audience.  The most immediate is the publish date.  Your resource will only be available to site visitors if the publish date is set to a date and time earlier than the present moment.

alias

The alias field gives you control over the name of the resource as it appears in the url.  The alias for the resource is the last bit of the web address after your domain name and the name of any collection or collections that the resource is filed under.  When you set the alias it will show up in the url at the top of the editor window after you save.

tags

The tags field is a comma separated list of topic keywords for the resource.  Some templates on your site (such as the blogging templates) are set to show the tags associated with a resource.  Visitors can click on a tag name to see all of your resources that have been 'tagged' with that keyword.  Tags are also taken into account by your site's built in search engine.

comments

You can elect to make any resource on your site commentable.  Simply toggle the "commentable" menu to "yes" and save.  When set to "yes" Renao will append a comment form to the bottom of the resource's page so your site visitors can leave comments.

template

If you are interested in creating custom templates for certain pages of your site, you can override Renao's normal template assignment routine by indicating a specific template to use in this field.
